Highly refined animal breeding

Animal breeding presents unique challenges. The cost of raising and maintaining livestock is much higher than plants, making it harder to maintain sufficient populations. In many animal species (e.g. bovine), long generations and a small number of offspring per animal add to cost and development time. The lack of a technology similar to selfing in plants means that each individual is essentially heterozygous, complicating genome assembly. Finally, creation of breeds is a useful tool to stabilize performance but creates problem of inbreeding depression. This increases the value of pedigree information coupled with genomic data.

Since animal traits are complex, a single locus accounts for very little of the phenotypic diversity, making a full genome approach much more important. Indeed, genomic selection applied to bovine and porcine breeding proved highly effective in increasing phenotypic gains with relatively low costs, underlining the efficacy of a full-scale genotyping system.

NRGene’s unique and proven platforms meet all these challenges. Whether starting from scratch (sheep, chicken, tilapia, and shrimp) or building on an existing genome (bovine, porcine, salmon), NRGene’s GenoMAGICTM provides the most affordable genotyping platform for any given species – with or without existing genomic data. At the same time, the system is accurate and is the only one which can uniquely handle phasing of long genetic sequences, correctly constructing the two haplotypes present in any individual. With a low entry fee, our customers can quickly build a cost effective, customized genotyping pipeline.
