Research Technician (Saskatoon) Part-Time (50%)

About this position:

We seek a highly motivated Research Technician to join our growing Canadian team. As a Research Technician you will take part in our expanding activities in operating projects in the lab, field, greenhouses and growth chambers. In addition, you will help the company equip our customers with cutting-edge genomic solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Involvement in research projects in the field, greenhouses and the lab.
  • Responsible for greenhouse and growth chambers operation, including planting, watering, managing growth conditions (e.g. vernalization), emasculations, crossing, seed harvest, storage preparation, and sample preparation from leaf tissue for DNA analyses.
  • Maintaining plant health by monitoring the temperature, humidity, and light levels of the greenhouses/growth chambers.
  • Monitoring plant growth rates, fertilizing plants, and watering them as needed.
  • Conducting research on new plant species to determine which ones would be best suited for growing in specific conditions or climates.
  • Preparing seeds for shipment for new plantings.
  • Participate in other administrative and operational activities.

The preferred applicant would have the following qualifications:

  • BSc/MSc (or equivalent) in life sciences or closely related technical fields of scientific research.
  • 2+ years of experience working on breeding technique;
  • 2+ years of managing greenhouse/growth chamber
  • Willingness and ability to work unconventional hours when required (including weekends, after regular working-day hours and holidays).

We seek a highly motivated Human Resources Assistant to carry out administrative duties, support recruitment efforts, record maintenance for payroll processing, as well as provide clerical support to management. The HRA will also assist in other aspects of the growing operations of NRGene Canada. The HRA will report to the General Manager/Vice President of Human Resources and will play a key role in developing the personnel and work culture of NRGene Canada. Responsibilities:

  • Create and lead the HR strategy under the supervision of the VP of Human Resources and work closely with the NRGene Canada General Manager to identify priorities.
  • Support the organization’s growth by developing a talent acquisition plan, leading the hiring process, and the onboarding process to welcome and integrate new employees in terms of their career, personal development, and performance.
  • Assist the VP of Human Resources in employee engagement and retention, monitoring employee performance, workforce planning, promotions and advancement, and terminations.
  • Develop and implement creative initiatives to enhance employee satisfaction and corporate culture.
  • Develop a data-driven, metrics-based approach to assess company success and gaps in employee performance, culture, and engagement.
  • Assist management in creating ad-hoc initiatives such as hackathons, meet-ups, and an “NRGENE academy”.
  • Assist the VP of Human Resources in providing guidance to senior staff through coaching and mentoring.
  • Communicate with the public as needed and handle complaints and grievance procedures.

The preferred applicant would have the following qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma in Human Resources or business management. A Master’s degree in an appropriate field would be an advantage.
  • Proven experience as a Human Resources Manager, Staff Assistant or another relevant Human Resources/administrative position.
  • Hands-on experience with Human Resources Information Systems or Human Resources Management Systems.
  • Highly computer proficient, including advanced capabilities with Excel and PowerPoint.
  • General knowledge of various Saskatchewan/Canada employment laws and practices.
  • Excellent organizational and strong communications skills.
  • Eager to learn and self-motivated.
  • Team player who can also work independently.

About this position:

NRGene’s DevOps engineers play a critical role in building NRGene’s cloud-based platforms. Your responsibilities will range from defining cloud-based infrastructure to highly scalable distributed cluster-computing; from orchestration frameworks and container technologies, security and networking to improvements to our development-cycle. The role requires in-depth knowledge and expertise in a broad range of areas and technologies including CI/CD, cloud services (AWS), infrastructure as code, databases – both SQL and nonSQL, networking, OS (Linux) and much more.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Design and build NRGene’s computational infrastructure.
  • Define and implement core technologies and frameworks.

  • Experience with networking and system administration – an advantage.
  • Experience with container and orchestration technologies (Kubernetes, Docker, Kaniko).
  • Actual experience in writing scripts in various languages (Python, Bash).
  • Experience with Modern CI/CD tools and methods (Jenkins, Github actions).
  • Experience with cloud security best practices, including: authentication and networking – an advantage.
